According to a new report from The Street, Disney executives are pressing Apple to include most of its channels, including several spinoffs of its mainstays ESPN and Disney Channel, in the new Apple TV online streaming service. However, Apple only wants Disney’s core channels in an effort to keep prices lower for customers.
Disney has made it clear that it wants to drive the strongest deal it can get,
The talks with Disney is more important to Apple because Disney Channels, which also includes ABC Family, are considered essential to move families towards Online TV services and choose lower-priced Internet-based options to their cable or satellite services.
Disney wants to protects its huge profits that comes from satellite operators and its current contract with them it to license most or all its channel. So Disney trying to get Apple to follow the same is a no brainer. It will be interesting to see how the negotiations pans out as Disney CEO Bob Iger is also a member of Apple’ board.
Apple hopes to announce content partners for its broadband video service in June, according to media reports, and to launch its subscriber service later in the year. Apple is aiming for a 25-channel offering priced at $30 to $40 a month.
