How To Backup And Restore HTC One

Learn how to backup and restore your HTC One. Worried that you might lose important stuff on HTC One? Back up HTC One before you erase the storage, do a factory reset, or upgrade to a new phone.

HTC Backup

Use the built-in HTC Backup to back up your accounts, apps, settings, and more to the cloud so that it will be easier to restore them on HTC One (after a factory reset) or newer phone

HTC Sync Manager

Use HTC Sync Manager to import music, photos, and videos to your computer. You can also sync locally stored contacts, calendar events, bookmarks, documents, and playlists to your computer.

Other backup options

Separately back up other data and file types if they’re not supported in HTC Backup and HTC Sync Manager. In some apps, you can back up data to the storage on the phone so you can easily restore them after a factory reset.

  • If you’re backing up data to the storage, don’t choose to erase the storage when you do a factory reset.
    • Messages: Back up your text messages to the storage on the phone, or save them as an email attachment.
    • Contacts: Save contacts and other personal data to your online accounts so you can just sync them when switching to another phone.
  • If you have locally stored contacts in the People app, export them to the storage on the phone.
    • Files: Manually copy and paste files by connecting HTC One to your computer as a disk drive.
  • Upload files to online storage and services.
  • Other data: If you added new words to your personal dictionary in the onscreen keyboard, back up the dictionary to the storage or save it as an email attachment.
  • Check the other apps to see if they support exporting data to the storage.

How to use HTC Backup

Save the time and frustration of restoring your content when you do a factory reset or you lose, damage, or buy another phone. On HTC One, use HTC Backup to do a regular backup to the cloud so you can easily restore your content next time.

  • HTC Backup uses your Dropbox storage to keep your content. The types of content that it can back up and restore include the following:
    • Home screen settings: These include your Home screen feed settings, widgets, and Home screen layout.
    • Accounts and passwords: Except for some accounts (such as Facebook and Google), HTC Backup can store the login credentials of the email and social network accounts that you’ve set up on your phone.
    • Apps and settings: These include your web bookmarks, personal dictionary (of the keyboard), Wi-Fi networks, settings in the TV app (such as favorites and reminders), apps you’ve installed, and over 150 other settings.

Backup HTC One

  • Turn on HTC Backup to do a daily backup of your content over Wi-Fi. You can turn it on by selecting Back up phone daily while doing the on-device setup, or enable it in Settings.

Note: Turning on HTC Backup will disable backup of settings to Google servers.

  • Slide the Notifications panel open, and then tap Settings icon.
  • Tap Backup & reset.
  • Tap the Backup On/Off switch.
  • Choose HTC Account as your backup account, and sign in to your account.

Note: You can sign in with your HTC Account or Facebook account. If you’re already signed into your Google Account, tap it to change your backup account to your HTC Account.

  • Sign in to Dropbox, if you haven’t done so.
  • Once your phone has finished backing up, you’ll see the last backup date and time under Backup history.
  • To manually start a backup, tap Back up now under Backup history.

Restore content to your HTC One

  • If you used HTC Backup to back up HTC One, you can restore your content after a factory reset, or to a new HTC phone over Wi-Fi.
  • Turn on your phone, choose to restore content, and then select Restore from HTC Backup on the Set up phone screen.
  • Sign in using your HTC Account or Facebook, depending on which account you used to back up your phone before.
  • Sign in to Dropbox, and choose to allow HTC Backup to access Dropbox. Your backup history will then be displayed.
  • Select a backup, and then tap Next.
  • Wait for your accounts and settings to be restored.
  • Tap OK to continue restoring your previously installed apps.

How to backup text messages on HTC One

Keep important text messages by backing them up to the phone storage. You can easily restore backed up text messages after you’ve deleted them from your message list.

  • Open the Messages app.
  • Tap Menu icon > Back up/Restore SMS > Back up > Back up SMS.
  • Enter a name for your backup file, and then tap OK.

How to restore text messages on HTC One

You can only restore text messages that were exported using the Back up SMS feature.

  • Open the Messages app.
  • Tap Menu icon > Back up/Restore SMS > Restore.
  • Choose how you want to restore the messages, and tap Next.
  • Tap the backup file to import.
  • Tap OK.

How to backup text messages by email on HTC One

You need to set up your email account in the Mail app.

  • On the Messages screen, tap Menu icon > Back up/Restore SMS.
  • Tap Back up > Back up SMS via mail. The back up file is attached to an email.
  • Enter your email address.
  • Compose your email message, and then tap Send.
  • To restore your text messages to HTC One, open the email message with the backup file attachment from the Mail app. Tap the attachment to download it first, and then tap it again to open the backup file to import.

How to backup your contacts on HTC One

  • Open the People app.
  • On the People tab, tap Menu icon > Manage contacts.
  • Tap Import/Export contacts > Export to phone storage.
  • Select an account or type of contacts to export, and then tap OK.

How to restore contacts on HTC One

You can only restore contacts that were backed up using the Export to phone storage feature.

  • On the People tab, tap Menu icon > Manage contacts.
  • Tap Import/Export contacts > Import from phone storage.
  • If you have more than one account set up, tap the type for the imported contacts.

How to backup personal dictionary on HTC One

You can back up new words youve added to the predictive text dictionary.

  • Slide the Notifications panel open, and then tap Settings icon > Language & keyboard.
  • Tap HTC Sense Input.
  • Tap Personal dictionary > Menu icon > Back up to storage or Back up to email.
  • When prompted, tap OK.

  • Tap HTC Sense Input.
