Arune Singh introduced the panel which included Executive Editor Tom Brevoort and writers Jonathan Hickman, Dennis Hopeless, Kieron Gillen. There was also an empty chair for an absent Rick Remender. With Remender missing; Brevoort reiterated the synopsis of Uncanny Avengers. Captain America assembles a team of Avengers and X-Men to take on the reborn Red Skull. Brevoort said the book was full of crazy insane-o in the brain-o stuff, which perhaps unknowingly is a reference to the disturbing opening pages of Uncanny Avengers #1.
Hickman said that his Avengers book will be the biggest book the franchise has ever seen. Its no news that the movie came out and did well. To have to follow that up with a brand new book, we wanted something bigger than Hollywood could ever pay for. He listed a new female Captain Universe, Hyperion, and the first human member of the Imperial Guard –a female smasher — as new additions to the team.
Brevoort said they had 3 to 4 years of content planned for Avengers and spoke to Hickmans style of telling long-form stories where many elements set up at the beginning pay off a long time down the line. Jon is doing the same kind of planning on Avengers and New Avengers, so I can say just like Fantastic Four but with the Avengers and bigger, Brevoort said.
As for New Avengers, Hickman spoke about how it will feature the Illuminati who are the superheroes secretly ruling the world while the main Avengers team saves the world in the spotlight. Ive never been more excited to write a book than New Avengers, Hickman said.
Whereas Hickmans Avengers books have a huge scope, Kelly Sue DeConnicks Avengers Assemble series will be what Brevoort described as shot glass Avengers, which are shorter, sharper, and more character focused stories. The first arc will show the rivalry between Hulk and Iron Man, while the second will be called Widows Ledger and features Black Widow dealing with the sins of her past with the help of Hawkeye and Spider-Woman.
Remender arrived at the panel to much applause for the flagship book of Marvel NOW! and rehashed the details of Uncanny Avengers. He went on to detail that Kang will play a large role in both his book and Hickmans Avengers books.
A new creative team on Secret Avengers was announced in Nick Spencer and Luke Ross. The book will feature Nick Coulson from the Marvel movie universe and will combine S.H.I.E.L.D. with the Avengers in a new way. The team is so secret that people on the team dont know who else is on the team because their memories are erased after each mission.
Hopeless detailed his Avengers Arena series where Arcade pits several Marvel teenage superheroes against each other on an island. Singh revealed some Lord of the Flies and Hunger Games parody covers that paid reference to the obvious influences for the series. Its a huge book with terrifying things in it, Hopeless said.
Gillens Young Avengers series will showcase a new group including Kid Loki, Hulkling, Wiccan, Hawkeye (Kate Bishop), Noh-Varr, and Miss America. While Alan Heinbergs series dealt with what its like to be a 16 year-old superhero, Gillen said his will be what it are like to be 18.
