The Android 5.0 Lollipop source code hit AOSP earlier this week and Sony has moved fast to get the latest version of Android up and running on its flagship Xperia Z3.
The company announced today that the AOSP version of Lollipop is now running on the Xperia Z3, Z2, and Z1. The goal is not to offer users early access to the latest versions of Android (indeed, Sony points out that the software is not certified and not intended for daily use). Instead, the company wants to provide developers with the tools they need to build their own custom ROMs using AOSP and their Xperia phone. Sony has promised developers the necessary binaries “as soon as possible.”
If you’re an Xperia user waiting for Android 5.0 to land on your device in an official capacity that is intended for every day use, you’ll have to wait a while. After that, the update will be rolled out to the rest of the Xperia Z series, including the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1, Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z1 Compact, Xperia Z2, Xperia Z2 Tablet, Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3v, Xperia Z3 Compact and Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact.
