Today, WhatsApp has announced that they now have reached over 900 million monthly active users. The company’s founder Jan Koum announced the news on Facebook.
WhatsApp was launched in 2009 as an instant messaging client. By 2013, it reached over 300 million active users and that was before Facebook decided to pay $19 billion for the service. In January 2015, WhatsApp was the most globally popular messaging app with more than 600 million active users. In April 2015, WhatsApp reached 800 million active users.
Now WhatsApp boasts over 900 million. WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum announced the news on Facebook from the social network’s corporate office in Palo Alto. For the record, yes, Mark Zuckerberg liked the post.
At the rate it is growing, it will not be long before WhatsApp hits more than 1 billion monthly active users.
